Which IPD should I choose? [Beyond 1 only]

IPD Choice Guide

This guide was made for the Beyond 1. It can still come in handy for any second-hand users of the Beyond 1 looking to get their IPD refitted, but for any Beyond 2 users this guide is not required, as you can adjust the IPD to exactly where you need it after receiving!

Terminology

  • Scan IPD: The IPD number in your scan confirmation email, which arrives shortly after performing your face scan.

  • Opto IPD: Your far IPD as provided by your optometrist (eye doctor), rounded down if it is not a whole number. For example, 65.7mm as your Opto IPD should simply be 65mm

  • Headset IPD: Your preferred IPD on other headsets

What IPD to Choose

  • Easy Mode: Use 1mm narrower than your opto IPD

    • In our experience, an optometrist measured IPD is the most reliable source for choosing the IPD for your Beyond.

  • If you prioritize FOV over the best possible visual comfort...

    • Use 2mm narrower than your headset IPD

  • If you prioritize stereo overlap in your other headsets, and knowingly sacrifice FOV for visual comfort...

    • Use your exact headset IPD

  • IF you don't pay attention to any of that, and you don't have an Opto IPD, you're better off either...

    • Using your scan IPD minus 1mm, or

    • Using your headset IPD minus 1mm

Some "Tiebreaker" Tips

If you get conflicting numbers from the different methods above, here are some rules to adhere to:

  • Never choose an IPD more than 1mm under your opto IPD

  • Never choose an IPD more than 2mm under your headset IPD

Why does this guide exist?

The Bigscreen Beyond is a whole different animal from other headsets. It marks a brand new form factor and weight class in the market! As such, it has very small and sensitive lenses. It is important that your IPD is properly determined. Going from the wrong IPD to the right IPD can be like staying in a 2-star hotel vs. a 5-star hotel. It really matters!

Why shouldn't I use my headset IPD with Beyond?

There are a few key reasons for this. Most consumer VR headsets:

  1. Target a 1.3-2 meter focal plane

  2. Have a larger and more forgiving eyebox

As a result, such headsets can comfortably be used at IPD settings which are multiple millimeters wider or narrower than your exact far IPD. They also work best when set to your far IPD. Beyond targets a 1 meter focal plane, therefore your pupils rest closer together (than your far IPD) when comfortably focusing and converging on the picture. As such, we have come to recommend these guidelines.

Other Methods

There are several other methods to possibly obtain an IPD reading, however they are not as reliable as the above sources (optometrist and previous VR headsets), so we generally don't recommend going with them. This includes...

  • Other consumer-facing IPD measurement apps

  • Manual measurements with a mirror and ruler

  • Near-vision IPD measurements, such as for reading glasses

Help! The "Change IPD" link doesn't work anymore!

If the change IPD button doesn't allow you to update your preferred IPD, the link may be expired. Feel free to contact us at support@bigscreenvr.com and we can update your order IPD at any time prior to shipping!
