Precautions while using your Beyond
Overview
The Beyond is a specialized piece of VR equipment, and in order to ensure you have the best experience with your Beyond, these are some general precautions for what to avoid.
Usage precautions
Keep Out of Direct Sunlight
Sunlight, although seemingly harmless, can destroy your Beyond's optics and displays. The optics act as a magnifying glass and sunlight can permanently damage the display and optics. Ensure you store your Beyond away from any sunlight.
Avoid Extreme temperatures
For the longevity and optimal performance of your VR headset, always keep it away from very hot or cold environments. Store in a moderate temperature setting to protect its delicate components.
Be careful with Pulley systems
Pulley systems are a convenient way to ensure the cable for your Beyond is out of the way - use caution, as a poorly set-up pulley system can cause excess strain on the cable, and cause earlier failures compared to normal use.
The cable is designed to withstand compression, but not tension. Avoid any tension on the cable, making sure there's some slack between each loop, and especially making sure it doesn't hang or pull on the plug ends.
Use the cable clip on the headset with some slack in between the clip and port on the Beyond, to avoid exerting any excess force on it.
Avoid situations that can cause "OLED Burn-in"
Because the Beyond uses an OLED panel, it's possible for the screen to form a "persistent image" ghost if the display is left on a static image for a long period of time.
Since you're actively moving in VR, even slightly, this effect is rare. However, there are some situations that can cause this effect over time.
Sleeping in VR while relatively static & the display brightness set normally
The OyasumiVR App has utilities that can help, such as reducing the brightness to a minimum while sleeping.
Static HUD elements, such as the VRChat mic icon
For this reason, burn-in protections such as having the mic icon fade out, or having it move slightly over time are enabled by default. Turning the icon off entirely also works.
Leaving the display turned on while sitting on a desk
By default, the displays will turn off when the proximity sensor (in between the lenses, near your nose) is not triggered, and the Beyond is safe to place on a desk. However, if another object triggers the proximity sensor continuously, the displays can be left enabled for an extended period of time with a static image.
OLED "Burn-in" is not covered under warranty.
Maintenance
Never use any Alcohol or Liquids
For the longevity of your Beyond, it's crucial to steer clear of cleaning with alcohol (IPA) and any other liquids. These substances can damage the electronics, exterior shell, and optics.
Clean the Beyond's lenses carefully
Use the provided clean K-cloth on the lenses, and remove the prescription lens inserts from the Beyond when cleaning to avoid damage. See the "How to clean your Beyond's lenses" help article.
