SteamVR Error Codes
Overview
SteamVR can break in a truly amazing variety of ways, and will often pop up a small error code of 3 digits. What do they mean, and how do we fix them? Find out in this article...
Error 108, 109, 208, 436 AKA "Connection trouble"
Error 108 "Headset not detected":
See the "Headset Not Detected" help article.
Error 109 "Not initialized":
🔍 Common Causes
• Loose or faulty DisplayPort connection
• GPU not recognising the headset as a display
• Headset plugged into the motherboard instead of the GPU
• Cable/adapter issues - passive adapters, low-quality extenders
• High refresh-rate monitors stealing bandwidth (e.g. 4K 240Hz on RTX 4090)
• Firmware or driver conflicts
🛠️ Recommended Steps
1. Check the DisplayPort connection
Ensure the Beyond is plugged directly into the GPU.
Reseat the DisplayPort cable.
2. Restart everything
Reboot the PC.
Fully power-cycle the headset (unplug USB, video, and power for 30 seconds).
3. Lower monitor refresh rates
Set your monitor(s) to 60Hz temporarily in Windows Display Settings.
High-bandwidth displays can block the headset from initializing.
4. Try another GPU DisplayPort
Switch to a different DisplayPort output if available.
5. Update GPU drivers
Use DDU to cleanly remove old drivers.
Reinstall a stable driver version (Nvidia/AMD).
6. Avoid passive adapters or extenders
Use a native DisplayPort connection whenever possible.
7. Test on another PC (if possible)
If it works elsewhere, the issue is likely with the original system or GPU.
You can also try the following steps to reset connected devices - this can also help for controller tracking, or connectivity issues in general.
If you use any Lighthouse trackers, such as Tundra or Vive full-body tracking pucks, disconnect all of your dongles from the PC first.
Unplug all of the linkbox cables (USB-A and Displayport) from the PC. Then go to SteamVR properties in Steam, and turn off
Steam Cloudunder the General tab.Next, launch SteamVR. (Don't reconnect any of your VR gear just yet!)
Browse to Settings (hamburger menu) > Developer > Developer Settings:
In here, click the button labeled 'Remove All SteamVR USB Devices':
Next, reboot your PC, plug the beyond link box back in, and launch SteamVR. You might get the 'Welcome to your headset!' prompt as the drivers setup again.
Then, pair your controllers to the headset.
Finally, if you have FBT trackers, reconnect your dongles and re-pair those.
Some users have also find out that It appears vrserver.exe is crashing, to fix this look below:
Open vrserver.exe, then launch steamvr
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\bin\win64 (Path where it is located)
Reopening vrserver.exe from this path (or whatever drive letter you installed steamvr on) will allow you to then successfully launch steamvr without restart
Please note as well, you may get a Steam 109 error + SteamVR error saying displayport issue, that could be a cause of you having too many monitors (especially high refresh rate) plugged in and need to turn one off. See: Common Connection Issues
Error 208 "Headset display disconnected":
Check the AMD Setup Guide if you're using an AMD GPU!
🔍 Common Causes
• Loose DisplayPort connection
• Incorrect port used - e.g. plugged into motherboard instead of GPU
• GPU not detecting the Beyond as a display
• Integrated graphics interference (laptops or desktops with iGPU + dGPU)
• Corrupted or outdated GPU drivers
• Direct Mode issues in SteamVR
• Adapter/extender problems - passive vs active adapters
🛠️ Recommended Steps
1. Reconnect the DisplayPort cable
Ensure it's firmly connected to the dedicated GPU, not the motherboard.
2. Reboot the PC
Helps reset display detection.
3. Disable integrated graphics
In BIOS or Device Manager (if applicable).
4. Force SteamVR into Direct Mode
SteamVR → Settings → Developer → Enable Direct Display Mode, then restart SteamVR.
5. Update GPU drivers
Use DDU to cleanly uninstall old drivers.
Reinstall a stable recommended driver version (Nvidia/AMD).
6. Try another DisplayPort output
Some ports initialise VR displays better than others.
7. Avoid adapters/extenders
Or ensure they are active adapters if conversion is required.
Error 436 "Display Connection Trouble":
If you're using a laptop, see the Using a Laptop With the Beyond guide. A compatible laptop GPU and adapter connected to the discrete GPU is required.
SteamVR will give a 436 error if the GPU can't run the Beyond (NVIDIA 2000 series or AMD 5000 series or better) - older cards like the 1080ti won't work.
🔍 Common Causes
• DisplayPort connection issue - loose or unstable DP cable
• Extended Mode instead of Direct Mode
• Multiple monitors or high-resolution displays causing conflicts
• GPU not properly detecting the headset
• Driver conflicts - outdated or incorrect GPU drivers
• Display scaling issues - DPI or unusual multi-monitor configurations
🛠️ Recommended Steps
1. Reconnect the DisplayPort cable
Ensure it's firmly connected to the dedicated GPU, not the motherboard.
2. Restart SteamVR
A fresh launch can reinitialise the compositor.
3. Reboot your PC
Clears lingering display or compositor issues.
4. Force Direct Mode
SteamVR → Settings → Developer → Enable Direct Display Mode, then restart SteamVR.
5. Update GPU drivers
Install the latest stable drivers from Nvidia or AMD.
6. Simplify your display setup
Temporarily disable extra monitors or reduce refresh rates to eliminate conflicts.
7. Switch Refresh rates in the utility
In some cases, the headset may not function until its initially swapped to either the 75hz or 90hz modes.
